There seems to be little doubt tha the proverbial man in the street operates on the basis of a set of decision rules that are variously referred to as "recipes", "codes", "maps" and "mazeways." These, generally, are conventions and accordingly tend to be taken for granted. They are trusted not because they have been tested or grounded but because they are familiar. It often turns out that these familiar modes of procedures, these trusted habits of mind, are nothing than "dead metaphors" -giving the rise of nonsense, error, and even tragedy that can attend the use of stereotypes. If, however, we follow Alfred Schutz, the sign of the "well-informed citizen" is that he will not accept formulas until he understands them and he will not act under the guidance unless they are reasonably well founded. The well-informed citizen, therefore, is a methodologist; the moment anyone transforms the "givens" of his day into problematic questions, at the moment he has opened inquiry into the logic of procedure of analysis.
